Masik Shivratri Story 2025

According to mythology, there was a hunter named Chitrabhanu who used to hunt animals to provide food for his family. He was in debt for a moneylender and was not able to repay the loan for a long time. As a result, one day Moneylender imprisoned him in a Shiva monastery. Coincidentally, that was Shivratri. A religious ceremony was being held at Moneylender's house, and the hunter listened carefully to the religion related to Lord Shiva. The next day, he also heard the story of Shivratri. That evening, Moneylender called him and asked for repayment of the loan. Chitrabhanu promised to moneylender that we will pay the entire amount the next day and was released from captivity.
As usual, Chitrabhanu went into the forest in search of hunt. But since he had been in captivity all day, he was extremely hungry and thirsty. In search of prey, he wandered far into the forest. As night fell, he realized he would have to spend the night in the jungle. He climbed a Bel (Bilva) tree near a pond to spend the night. Unbeknownst to him, there was a Shivling (symbolic representation of Lord Shiva) under that tree, covered with Bel leaves. While breaking branches to make his resting spot, some twigs and leaves accidentally fell on the Shivling. Thus, although unintentionally, the hunter observed the fast and also offered Bilva leaves to the Shivling.
After the first quarter of the night passed, a pregnant doe came to the pond to drink water. As the hunter readied his bow and drew the arrow, the doe spoke, “I am pregnant and about to give birth soon. If you kill me now, you will be taking two lives at once, which is not right. Let me give birth to my baby, and I promise to return to you. Then, you may kill me.” The hunter loosened the bowstring, and the doe disappeared into the forest shrubs. In the process of drawing and releasing the bow, more Bilva leaves unknowingly fell on the Shivling. In this way, unknowingly, the worship for the first quarter of the night was completed.
